About this tour

A Mount Fuji 2 day tour from Tokyo gives the mountain a full day of its own instead of the rushed afternoon it usually gets. Day one covers Tokyo, day two covers the Fuji Five Lakes, and you sleep in your own Tokyo hotel in between. Hotel pickup is included on both days and the price covers the whole vehicle rather than each seat.

What you see over the two days

Day one is the city: Senso-ji in Asakusa, the moat and East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, the forest path into Meiji Shrine, Shibuya Crossing from street level and from above, and the wide streets of Ginza. Day two heads west to the mountain. The Kachi Kachi ropeway lifts you to a viewpoint over Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park sits on the far shore with seasonal flowers in front of Fuji, Oshino Hakkai holds eight spring ponds fed by snowmelt, and Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha is the head shrine of the Fuji faith, where climbers have started from for centuries.

How the two days are paced

Day one is short on driving and long on stops, with fifteen to thirty minutes between places. Day two is the opposite, with about two hours out, two back and more between the lakes, so it is a driving day with the mountain as the reward. Your English-speaking guide reorders day two around the cloud, because Fuji decides what is worth seeing and when.

Who this tour suits

Right for a first visit with two spare days, and for anyone who tried a one day Fuji trip before and felt rushed. It is also the better choice in unsettled weather, since two chances at the mountain beat one. Our drivers hold a Japan Class 2 commercial passenger licence, and your English-speaking guide is the same person driving the car.

Best time for these two days

Winter gives the clearest mountain of the year, with snow on the peak and dry air. April brings blossom in Tokyo and at the lakes, with crowds to match. Oishi Park is at its best in mid summer, when the lavender is out, though that is the weakest season for seeing Fuji itself. Late autumn gives colour around the lakes and good visibility.

Highlights

  • Senso-ji, the Imperial Palace gardens and Shibuya Crossing in one unhurried day
  • The Kachi Kachi ropeway to a viewpoint over Lake Kawaguchi and the mountain
  • Oishi Park, where seasonal flowers stand in front of Fuji across the water
  • Oshino Hakkai, eight spring ponds fed by snowmelt off the mountain
  • Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, the head shrine of the Fuji faith
