About this tour
A Kamakura and Yokohama 2 day tour puts two very different places either side of one night, both close enough to Tokyo that you sleep in your own hotel between them. Kamakura was Japan's capital eight hundred years ago and is all temples and coastline. Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859 and is a port city with a Chinatown and a modern waterfront. Hotel pickup is included on both days and the price covers the vehicle rather than each seat.
What you see over the two days
Day one runs south to Kamakura: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu at the top of its long approach, the bamboo grove and tea house at Hokoku-ji, lunch on Komachi Street, the Great Buddha sitting in the open at Kotoku-in, the hillside gardens of Hase-dera, the coast road where the railway runs beside the beach, and the bridge across to Enoshima. Day two is Yokohama: the historic buildings collected into Sankei-en garden, the largest Chinatown in Japan, lunch on Motomachi, the Hikawa Maru liner at Yamashita Park, the Red Brick Warehouse, the Cup Noodles Museum and a daytime view from Yokohama Marine Tower's observation deck near Yamashita Park.
How the two days are paced
Each day is a full day with pickup from your Tokyo hotel and drop-off back there in the evening, so you do not pack a bag or change hotels. Kamakura is about an hour south and Yokohama about half an hour, which leaves both days long on sightseeing and short on driving. Your English-speaking guide reorders stops around crowds and weather rather than following a fixed list.
Who this tour suits
Right for a trip with two spare days that does not want two identical ones. It also suits families, since Enoshima has a beach and the Cup Noodles Museum is built for children. Both days are mostly flat, with steps at Hase-dera and a steady climb on Enoshima. Our drivers hold a Japan Class 2 commercial passenger licence, and your English-speaking guide is the same person driving the car.
Best time for these two days
June brings the hydrangeas at Hase-dera, which is the busiest week in Kamakura. Autumn gives colour on both days without the crowds. Winter is clear and cold, and Mount Fuji shows across the water from the Kamakura coast road. The Yokohama waterfront is best in the evening, so day two is worth finishing late.
